A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It is made of the same pure carbon, has the same crystal structure, and has the same hardness, fire and brilliance as a diamond mined from the earth. The difference is where it was grown: in a controlled laboratory, over a few weeks, instead of deep underground over billions of years.
At GTR Goudsmit we are goldsmiths first. We source lab-grown diamonds and set them in jewelry that we design and make ourselves, so you deal with the person who actually makes your ring, from the first sketch to the final polish.
Physically, chemically and optically the same. Lab-grown diamonds rate 10 on the Mohs scale, so they are just as durable for everyday wear, including an engagement ring you will wear for decades.
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost significantly less than mined diamonds of comparable size and quality. That means you can choose a larger stone, a better colour and clarity, or put more of your budget into the design of the ring itself.
No mining is involved, and the origin of every stone is known. For many couples this peace of mind matters as much as the sparkle.
Because we design and manufacture in-house, your diamond can be set in a one-of-a-kind piece, not an off-the-shelf mount. We can also reuse gold from old jewelry to make something new.
From seed to stone
A tiny diamond seed is placed in carbon and subjected to extreme pressure and heat, recreating the conditions deep in the earth where natural diamonds form. The carbon slowly crystallises around the seed.
A diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. The gas is heated, and carbon atoms settle on the seed layer by layer, growing a rough diamond that is then cut and polished.
Either way, the rough stone is cut and polished by the same methods used for mined diamonds, producing the same brilliant finished gem.
